Language Activity Resource Kit — Second Edition CD-ROM (Lark-2 CD ROM) software is a computer program designed to allow patients extended therapy time either in a clinical setting or for independent use at home. This innovative program is intended for use in conjunction with the updated collection of colorful and stimulating objects, photographs, illustrations, and printed words or phrases found in the Lark-2 Kit. It offers a various selection of therapeutic activities that address right-hemisphere dysfunction and speech-production tasks aimed at improving intelligibility.
The Lark-2 Software benefits those with aphasia or moderate to severe language deficiencies caused by stroke, head injury, or other neurological disorders. The program allows patients additional practice, promoting a transition from face-to-face therapy to computer-assisted sessions. Patients should be able to comfortably operate a computer, either independently or with supervision from a clinician.
The program allows the clinician to create a desktop link (shortcut) on the patient’s computer for easy activation. During the set-up, the clinician can also designate a criterion for automatic advancement, based on their discretion and knowledge of the patient’s progress. One or more programs can be specifically designed for each patient, depending on their needs (e.g. matching, listening, reading). Each exercise is a different shortcut icon for easy identification and access.
As the patient practices, the program will automatically adjust the level of ease or difficulty, based on a percentage of accuracy criteria previously determined by the clinician. For example, when the program advances in difficulty, another stimulus choice is added to the selection, assigning four choices the patient must choose from instead of 5. The patient’s overall accuracy results, length of performance time, as well as responses to each individual stimulus item are recorded. Colorful graphical displays of the patient’s progress reports can be viewed, written in summaries and printed for the clinician’s records.
